Step One: Start by arranging your place mat on the table.

Step Two: Gently place the dinner plate on your place mat.

Step Three: Fold your napkin into a large rectangle and place it on top of the dinner plate.

Step Four: Gently place your salad plate on top of the napkin.

Step Five: Place your salad fork on the far left side of the place mat followed by your dinner fork.

Step Six: To the immediate right of your dinner/salad plate gently place your dinner knife. Follow the before-mentioned placement with a soup spoon.

Step Seven: On the right corner of the place mat add a wine glass and the water glass.

Salad is typically served before the main course. The salad fork is often placed on the far left side of the place mat. The dinner fork is normally placed to the right of the salad fork.

In a similar fashion, soup is also served before the main course, hence, the soup spoon is often placed on the far right side of the place mat. The dinner knife usually flanks the dinner plate on the right side of the place mat.
